Phantom, Agent 001

Let me go ahead and start by stating this card is a powerhouse, this card can single handedly win you games if played at the right time. It would only make sense to grant the Gangster tribe a covert rare that was capable of turning the game around with its presence. The demons have The Master and the Guys have Satoshi. This character can easily be exploited by some of the abilities of the cheaper gangster cards, however many of the other tribes in the game have also gained in power and of course pacing. Insaine decks have several ways to get the cards out free of money cost and there are many effects in the game with alternate costs as well to help deal with a card such as this before turn seven as per its high money cost.

Blood Red Ebony Sharvan

I have seen this card turn games around several times, the problem with the Sharvan tribe is that even after a board wipe they can come back. I enjoy this aspect about the Sharvans since you can really only play one a turn, however, I rather this ability be on the double chunk epic requirement Sharvans. Cards with abilities that return cards back from the trashcan should involve a balance of high attack power or the utility of its activated abilities. Players should have to think should I activate this and get another Sharvan back? Or should I attack with this guy and 0WnZ0r! over several points of damage to my opponent? This is the kind of stuff that makes the game dynamic giving players options. Cards such as this along with other recursion are delimited to the stability of rare. This card has been changed several times, and this is the beauty of a game that is still in development, you can see changes as they appear!

Muerte Inquisitor

The Muerte Inquisitor is one of the few cards that survived the transition of the version 1.2 up to the 1.3 version of the UCG. This card however, is quite slow in pace to several other members of the Unspoken(…) group. Many cards in the UCG that cost four money or more should greatly affect the battlefield. This card is one that requires investment and thus should be easier to get out allowing players to amass cards in their hands to make it better. What use is the card late game if your opponent never has any cards in their hand? This is quite the reality when the game is at turn four or later. Many speed decks, especially the Insaines, can empty their hands by turn three or four and thus will leave a four costing Muerte Inquisitor as a dead draw. If the card is a dead draw then you will never make it better because you will want to play cards to replace or aid it and thus lower its power. This card has received a cost reduction from four to three in regards to this pacing issue and hopefully will be seen in many future control based decks in the UCG.

Executor Williams

This card was quite possibly the most broken card in the game, all you had to do was find a way to make all cards you would play lose the ability Arrogant and you can one turn kill with this guy. This was because if the card lost Arrogant it would make a copy of himself that would lose arrogant and then that copy would be able to copy itself since all characters attack one at a time. This is a loop I could not allow in the UCG as this is the kind of crap that other card games would call a “combo,” I personally call it cheap. A game is more about outwitting your opponent rather than just finding exploits that make the game very non-enjoyable. There is nothing more exciting that watching your opponent play with themselves and yes I made that sound dirty on purpose because this type of play style is very undesirable. To avoid this issue this card now has the static ability that it cannot attack the turn it comes into play on it. That way if the card were to lose arrogant it does not matter because the card can still not attack the turn it enters play.


The last errata to this card was absolutely fantastic, the card is cheap and offers two very useful forms of utility. The errata was so good that in fact I did not even really need to change anything on the card at all! Well Jeff, if you didn't change anything then why is it on Jeff's Erratas? Well the answer to that question is the card has a wicked new art that was drawn with my girlfriend's new marker set. The card now has the mysterious wanderer feel to it now and the moon in the background was a good addition to fill out the piece. I hope to see more artwork pieces such as this as we start to finalize the UCG more and start replacing other artworks that just did not survive the passing of time. I know I drew several of these pieces and it will be fantastic art training for me to re-imagine a lot of my old work. After all, UCG in itself is the same concept, a modern re-imagining of a classic game with new original mechanics. That is the beauty of the UCG it is all the games in one, yet perfectly modified to be a unique game in itself as well.

Ariwara Miki

Ahhh, this card makes another return to Jeff's Erratas. Last time we saw the superstar Miss Miki when she was an absolutely sluggish card that had hardly any late game bearing for her three cost and one power. A simple addition of the ability to generate Gizmo tokens at the cost of discarding a card and paying its money cost did indeed make the card better. However, this card by the time you get three money out and let it try to debilitate your opponent just takes too long for it to have any benefit. This card needed yet another speed boost so the card is now the same, but with a cost of Two instead of Three. That way the card can come into play earlier and allow players to really utilize its ability early game to sneak a few points of damage in and hopefully pop a few of your opponent's key cards into the Trash Can Zone before they can use them. This card can also be utilized early game to convert dead draws into usable Gizmo tokens that can be used to place aggression on your opponent and keep them on the defensive and not Kan Ariwara as the raises hell on the battlefield on turn at a time.

Gregory Jones

This was one card that I felt really needed a power buff, the card was basically the same thing as Lani, but had no tribe. The card was over all really good and the unblockable aspect of the card greatly impacted the game. However, cards like the before mentioned Executor Williams were cheaper and could be utilized easier than more expensive four costing cards. That is one thing I really noticed about the UCG as we create it, cards that cost four or more need to be really good otherwise they get out shined by cheaper similar cards as you can often get them out sooner and can play more copies. There were very few cards in the game that are four or more to play that I feel are worth playing over a cheaper card. Given money ratio and how damage removes cards from the deck. It is a really good idea to try to keep your over all money cost three or less just in case of being “Money Screwed” where you get no money cards or “Money Rich” where you get too many money cards. As part of the fix for Gregory, he kept the legend type as he now can count as any character type and buff them. Along with this he then will count as a character of that type and remains unblockable as he was before. This legend type will prevent him from being better than the current lords as you can often search for them since they already inherit the same character type as their tribe. I do plan to see this card in a lot of decks and that is fine as this card is a rare and you can only play two per deck.


Jeff's Erratas Volume #7

This is Jeff Crain, the Chief Project Coordinator here at Starcat Products and today I am going to bring you some changes to the UCG. This time the erratas were more focused on making the Gangster faction member count grow and adding some additional affects to various underpowered cards. The members of the Gangster faction were very limited and almost all of them had about three or four money costs. This tribe against top tier decks such as the guy deck and the Sharvan deck would not even stand a chance. Some changes needed to be made and I am here to bring them to you in full detail.

Cards Being Crafted

30%The Commit Sins: The Commit Sin cards are some of the fundamental cards in the Universal Card Game. We have currently commissioned the artist Henri dela Cruz to draw each “sin” card a panoramic picture that when placed next to the other sin cards will form one giant picture! This will be really neat once we have them done, as the sin in the world is entwined with our everyday life. It would be very flavorful to have the sin cards interlace to make one giant picture.


0% The Darkness Status Effects: In the Universal Card Game there are the three Inquisitors of the Inquisition. Did you know each of them has a name? That is right! Arcanist of the Inquisition has the name of Cass Havana, Templar of the Inquisition has the name of Khane Avanarus, and the Warlord of the Inquisition has the name of Ross Undersong. These character each wield a cursed weapon given to them by the Architect of the Flesh. We want to show the fall of these proud warriors with the “darkness” status effect cards that deal with the removal of various characters of specific designators. Similar to the “sin” cards, these cards will form one collaborative picture.


5% Tinkerer Ayaka Lizzy: Ayaka is one of the most powerful character cards currently in the Universal Card Game. Her artwork, while extremely good, is from the source material from which is was created for. This picture is not the best for a very powerful character card. We hope to commission the artist Val Hochberg that actually drew Ayaka on Riptor, Sharvan Elite to draw a unique artwork specifically for Ayaka’s character card. We have to wait until the beginning of June, but once we hear back we will keep you posted!
